Softgels vs Capsules: Which Format?
Softgels and two-piece capsules are made differently, suit different actives, and carry different costs. A side-by-side comparison.

Softgels and two-piece capsules are made differently, suit different actives, and carry different costs. A side-by-side comparison.

Softgels and capsules both deliver a dose in a swallowable shell, and on the shelf they can look almost identical. But they're different formats, made on different equipment, suited to different ingredients — and the choice shapes your cost, your claims, and your consumer experience.
Softgels win when your active is:
Softgels also carry a premium consumer perception: they read as "advanced" and "easy to swallow."
Trade-offs: higher tooling cost, more complex manufacturing (gel mass prep, drying tunnels), and higher MOQ than capsules.
Capsules win when your active is:
Capsules also offer vegetarian (HPMC) shells more readily, which matters for clean-label and plant-based positioning.
Trade-offs: less premium perception than softgels, can't hold oils without a secondary inner fill, and powders can have taste/burp issues if the shell breaks down.
| Factor | Softgel | Capsule |
|---|---|---|
| Native fill | Liquid (oil/suspension) | Powder/pellet/liquid |
| Shell | Formed + sealed in one step | Pre-made, filled + closed |
| Best for | Oils, oxidation-sensitive | Powders, probiotics, high-dose |
| Vegetarian option | Limited | Strong (HPMC) |
| Typical MOQ | Higher | Lower |
| Consumer perception | Premium | Functional |
Two questions:
If you're unsure, bring your active and your target claim to a manufacturer — they'll recommend the format that delivers your dose, protects your ingredient, and fits your shelf strategy.
The format decision is reversible only at real cost (new tooling, new stability work). Get it right at the start.
