How to Brief a Contract Manufacturer
The difference between a vague inquiry and a 24-hour actionable quote is a clear brief. Here is the checklist we ask every brand to complete.

The difference between a vague inquiry and a 24-hour actionable quote is a clear brief. Here is the checklist we ask every brand to complete.

Most delayed manufacturing projects do not fail in production. They stall in the first email — because the brief is too thin to quote.
A useful brief lets a contract manufacturer answer three questions quickly: Can we make it? At what MOQ and cost band? On what timeline?
The detail a manufacturer needs depends on the model you are buying, and this is where most founders under- or over-specify.
A common mistake is treating a custom project like a white-label quote and expecting a one-day price. Custom work needs a formulator's review before any number is credible — and that review can only start once the brief is complete.
Claims shape the formula, the label, and the documentation pack. "Supports immune health" is a structure/function claim that needs a substantiation file and an FDA notification. "Clinically studied ingredient" pulls in supplier documentation. Selling on Amazon adds a Supplement Facts image requirement; selling at retail adds a vendor compliance review.
State your target channel in the first brief. It changes which ingredients are viable (Amazon flags some NDI-likely actives), which tests the manufacturer sequences, and whether you need a stability protocol before launch. A brief that omits the channel forces the manufacturer to assume the easiest path — which is rarely the path you actually need.
When those six fields are present, our team can usually return MOQ, a directional price band, and a sample plan within one business day — then lock a formal quote once raw-material lead times are confirmed.
Two founders can approach the same manufacturer with similar ideas and get wildly different timelines. The difference is almost never the product — it is the brief.
The complete brief does not require more knowledge of manufacturing. It requires a founder to make a few decisions earlier — and those decisions are the ones that determine whether the project launches in 11 weeks or 24.
A brief travels faster when it carries its context with it. If you have any of the following, attach them rather than describing them in prose:
The brief is also your first read on the manufacturer. A credible partner responds with questions that show they read it — a formulator asking about active compatibility, QA asking about channel, production asking about timeline. A response that is just a price and a "let's get started" is a sign the brief was not actually reviewed, and the price is not credible.
