How to Brief a Contract Manufacturer (So Your Quote Is Actually Useful)

Most delayed manufacturing projects do not fail in production. They stall in the first email — because the brief is too thin to quote.

A useful brief lets a contract manufacturer answer three questions quickly: Can we make it? At what MOQ and cost band? On what timeline?

What to include in your first brief

1. Dosage format — softgel, tablet, capsule, liquid, powder, or daily pack.
2. Target volume — pilot quantity and first production order (even ranges are fine).
3. Formula status — finished formula (OEM), concept only (ODM), or ready-made white label.
4. Claims & market — US only, export, Amazon, retail, or clinic channel.
5. Packaging intent — bottle, stick pack, tub, dropper, or multi-unit daily sachet.
6. Must-haves — vegetarian shell, non-GMO inputs, child-resistant closure, specific actives.

What slows quotes down

• "We want something like the market leaders" with no dose or format.
• Asking for price without volume.
• Changing actives after samples are already in process.
• Artwork that arrives after film or bottle tooling has been ordered.
