"How fast can I launch?" is usually the second question a founder asks (right after "what's the MOQ?"). The honest answer: it depends on the route and the format — but the stages are predictable. Here's a realistic timeline.
These are industry-standard ranges — your real timeline depends on format, volume, packaging, and lab queue.
You and the manufacturer lock the format, dose, claims, packaging, and target price. Skimp here and every later stage slips.
Compress it: arrive with a one-page brief (target consumer, benefit, format preference, budget). Vague briefs add weeks.
The R&D lab develops or adapts the formula — ingredient selection, dose, prototype, internal review. OEM skips this (you bring the formula); private label skips it (the formula already exists).
Compress it: for ODM, be decisive on the prototype. Each revision cycle adds a week.
Representative samples for taste, appearance, and stability validation. This isn't a mockup — it's a mini production run.
Compress it: you can't safely. Sampling is where you catch problems before they scale. Build it in.
Full-volume manufacturing on dedicated cGMP lines, with in-process QC throughout. The longest single stage.
Compress it: book production slot early (good manufacturers schedule ahead) and finalize packaging artwork before production ends so you're not waiting on print.
Filling, capping/sealing, labeling, and secondary cartoning with your artwork. Often overlaps with the tail of production.
Compress it: approve artwork the moment samples pass. Artwork delays are the #1 cause of late shipments.
Finished-goods testing, documentation review, batch release, and dispatch to your warehouse or 3PL.
Compress it: you can't — this is the cGMP safety net. But a manufacturer that ships full documentation with the batch saves you days at retail onboarding.
In order of frequency:
When you request a quote, ask for a stage-by-stage timeline for your specific format and volume — not just a single "X weeks" number. A manufacturer that gives you the breakdown is one that actually schedules and can help you compress.
The fastest launch isn't the one that skips stages — it's the one that plans them.
